Rennes is one of historical capitals of the Duchy of Brittany. The city is laid at the centre of a sagged area of the Massif Armorican. Near the second century before Jesus-Christ, the city was founded by the Riedones tribe who choose the site of the Ille et Vilaine confluence for capital, and takes the name of Condate (which means "confluence" in Gallic). The city, included in the Britain marches, is gradually integrated into the kingdom of Brittany and is rapidly becoming a duke city. In the fifteenth century, Rennes consolidates the Gallo-Roman primitive walls, with two successive walls expanding the city. In the sixteenth century, after the incorporation of the Duchy of Brittany to the kingdom of France in 1532, the city becomes Brittany parliament headquarters. The fortifications against the French and English become unnecessary and are slowly dismantled until the early 20th century.
