Montmartre was a village situated for a long time outside of Paris. Its name has been probably originated from Mons Martis (The Mount of Mars), because the hill was location of a temple dedicated to Mars, the god of war during the Roman period. Since this time, we have referred to a possible second etymological origin: the Mount of martyrdom, because it was, according to the legend, an important transit place of Saint Denis, the first bishop of Paris, who would have survived to his execution. Montmartre was one of the important places of the Paris Commune in 1871.
