| Carcassonne is mostly renown as a fortified medieval city; but this rocky spur has been occupied by man since the VIth century BC, first as a Gallic settlement and a fortified Roman city from the III - IVth century AC. The Visigoths seized the oppidum in the Vth century, then the Saracens that remain about thirty years before being expelled by the Francs. Restored by Violley le Duc in the XIXth century, the city reached the consecration in 1997, by obtaining its classification on the list of sites in the world heritage of the humanity by the UNESCO and the lower city of Carcassonne "La Bastide Saint-Louis" is listed as a conservation area. | |
